Coffee Plant

Long ago, a couple friends and I used to walk eight blocks, even on the rainiest Portland winter days, to a coffee cart called Bad Kitty Koffee, run by Kevin McGrorty. Sometimes we did this twice a day. Kevin always offered tasty coffee at a good value, with a strong focus on keeping things local and sustainable. On these eight block walks, my mind would frequently wander to my long-standing dream of opening a coffeeshop.

In early 2003, realizing that I wasn't getting any younger and that this life was screaming past me, I left a good job to pursue the dream full time. I searched all over Portland for the right location, but always envisioned a place downtown that would be an oasis from the madness of the modern working world. I remained a frequent customer when Kevin reopened Bad Kitty in the Morgan Building, often stopping by to get advice on operations and observe an efficiently-run cafe. Seeking a change of pace, Kevin ultimately approached me to sell the coffeeshop, and Coffee Plant found a home.

I am very grateful to Kevin for his inspiration and mentorship during the seedling stages of Coffee Plant. I am grateful to my wife Anne for allowing me to frequently obsess over this dream as we brought it to reality, and I am thankful for the support from my family, my friends, and the great folks at Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
